ARCBR Aizawl

Advanced Research Centre for Bamboo and Rattan (ARCBR) is one among the nine Institutes and four Centers under the aegis of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), Dehradun, an autonomous body of the Ministry of Environment, Forests  &  Climate Change, Govt. of  India. 

The ARCBR was established in 2004 at Aizawl, Mizoram as a unit of Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat, Assam in accordance with the decision taken by the Standing Finance Committee, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India.   The Centre was inaugurated  by the Hon’ble Minister of State, Environment and Forests, Govt. of India Shri Namo Narayan Meena, on 29th Nov. 2004 at Bethlehem Vengthlang, Aizawl. The Centre is first of its kind in India for socio-economic upliftment of Northeastern people that revolve around Bamboos and Rattans.

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the official webpage of Advanced Research Centre for Bamboo and Rattan (ARCBR), Aizawl (Mizoram).

The Centre is aimed to cater the bamboo and rattan related research needs of all the eight northeastern States viz., Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.

I hope the information given in the webpage will be of great help to the viewers. Suggestions for improving the website are welcome.

Mandate :

The Centre is mandated to conduct advance research on Bamboo &  Rattan with regard to management and sustainable utilization, standardization of nursery techniques including cultivation practices, macro and micro propagation, diversity enrichment, genetic improvement and conservation of promising genetic resources, certification, technology development for value addition, edible shoot processing, product development including bamboo composites, Bamboo based tools/machines for bamboo working, extension of bamboo based knowledge and technologies to stakeholders.

The Centre is involved in active research on Bamboo & Rattan in the  following areas:   

Ø  Conservation and Sustainable Utilization.

Ø  Establishment of Germplasm Bank of Bamboo and Canes.

Ø  Establishment of Bamboosetum and Canetum.

Ø  Nursery technology including Cultivation practices.

Ø  Macro and Micro propagation.

Ø  Genetic improvement – Clonal garden, certification etc.

Ø  Technology for value addition, edible shoot processing, etc.

Ø  Product development including bamboo composites.

Ø  Bamboo based tools/machines for Bamboo working.

Ø  Extension of bamboo based knowledge and technologies to stakeholders.

 

Organizational Structure

The Centre is headed by a Director and at present there are three scientists and two regular ministerial staff posted at this Centre. For operationalization of the office and field works, 12 (Twelve) number of contractual staff have been engaged through service provider.

The present organizational set up is as follows :

Infrastructure

The ARCBR is fully established and the  office cum laboratory building at Bethlehem Venghlang, Aizawl, Mizoram was officially inaugurated on 16th March 2012 by the Honourable Chief Minister of Mizoram  Shri Lalthanhawla in the presence of Hon'ble Minister of Industries, Shri S. Hiato and the Director General of the ICFRE  Dr. V.K. Bahuguna, IFS.   The Centre has acquired about 11.63 ha land at Bethlehem Vengthlang, Aizawl for establishment of office cum laboratory complex, Farmers’ Hostels, Residential quarters, Model Nursery, etc.

Establishment of Research Station:

The Centre has obtained 100 hectare of Reserved Forest land from the Forest Department for establishing an experimental / research station at Khamrang about 50 Km. from Aizawl along the NH-54

Establishment of Van Vigyan Kendra

A Van Vigyan Kendra (VVK) has also been established in Mizoram State in close liaison with Environment and Forests Department of Mizoram and the Principal, Forest Training School is acting as Nodal officer. For smooth functioning of the VVK, a committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of the PCCF-Mizoram. Training courses for the villagers are being conducted regularly.  Further, a VVK nursery at Sairang has also been established for extension activities.

Research & Extension Activities

Completed Project Works

Following research and extension activities have been executed by the ARCBR :

  1. Forest types of Mizoram have been completed under All India Coordinated Research Project “Reassigning Forest Types of India for better management of  forests”

  2. Socioeconomic survey in all eight districts of Mizoram under the project titled “Identification of  forest lands in the forest fringe villages” funded by the National Rainfed Area Authority  (NRAA).

  3. A tissue culture laboratory in collaboration with the State Forest Department of Mizoram has been set up and operationalised.
  4. Conduct of regional and national seminar related to Bamboo and Rattan in the State.
  5. Agar wood (Aquilaria malaccensis) gene bank with 20 clones each having four replications has been established in ARCBR campus.
  6. A research plot of Dendrocalamus longisphatus, one of the most valued bamboo species of Mizoram is being established.
  7. Various trainings of local farmers have been conducted on Bamboo, Rattan and other tree species under VVK with ARCBR resource person.
  8. A small canetum with 8 cane species collected from Mizoram, Assam, and Tripura, North East India, has been established and maintained.
  9. A Bamboo Trail for the purpose of extension and education with a collection of about 30 bamboo species is also created.

Ongoing  Project Activities

Presently following four research projects funded by the ICFRE are going-on :

  1. Population genetic structure of Calamus species and influence of infectious diseases in Mizoram and Tripura of North East India.
  2. Studies on nursery diseases of economically important tree species in Mizoram and their management.
  3. Assessment, documentation and characterization of lichen diversity in Mizoram, North East India.
  4. Raising of planting materials of selected cane species and establishment of plantation in fringe villages of Assam and Mizoram to sustain rural livelihood.

Projected Activities under Pipeline:

Ø  Establishment of Modern Laboratories/Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF)

Ø  Common facility centre of bamboo for training and demonstration

Ø  Establishment of Bambusetum of superior germplasm of commercially significant Bamboos

Ø  Establishment of Canetum of various Rattan species

Ø  Establishment of Modern high-tech Bamboo and Rattan Nursery

Ø  Establishment of Demonstration plots of bamboo based agroforestry models

Ø Documentation of indigenous knowledge/practices on cultivation, harvesting, post harvest processing, utilization and flowering of bamboo
